Chares A. Armstrong - Meridian
Charles A. Armstrong, 82, retired Meridian High School Principal, died Friday, July 20, 2001 at home. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 27 a Barnham Funeral Home in Meridian. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Meridian with burial in Newton's Masonic Cemetery.
Born in Hickory, Mississippi in 1919 Charles spent his growing up years in Newton. He played football at Mississippi College. He served in the Navy as an ensign in the Pacific during World War II. In 1942 he married Margaret Holladay, his high school sweetheart. After the war he played professional football with the New York Americans. He obtained a Masters degree at the University of Alabama in 1946.
He began coaching at Brookhaven High School, where his team won the Big Eight Championship in 1952. He came to Meridian High School in 1953 as head football coach. During this time he was one of the founders of the Mississippi Coaches Association. He was appointed Principal of Meridian High in 1960 and remained in that position until he retired in 1980.
"Charlie A" was a faithful member of First Baptist Church where he served as deacon and a member of the Baracas Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include Margaret Holladay Armstrong, wife of 59 years; four children, Andy and his wife Dottie of Newton, MS., Robby and his wife Margery of Tulsa, OK., Kathy Griffin and her husband Levi of Wichita, KS. and Susan Shocket and her husband David of Wichia, KS.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Ruth and her husband Dr. Paul Mobley of Paris, TN and sister-in-law Myra Gulledge of Natchitoches, LA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Mace Armstrong, a sister, Faye Colt and two brothers, James and Lloyd Armstrong.
Pallbearers will be R.D. Harris, Mac Barnes, Bob Turnage, Steve Johnson, Charles Roberts, and Bob Jeffares. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Baracas Sunday School clas and the Deacons of FBC.
